Prenatal Massage is recommended for both, mom and baby. During pregnancy many hormonal changes happen, causing emotional and physical discomfort.
Prenatal massage assists the new mom to manage these changes by regulating hormone levels and improving cardiovascular health.
Studies done in the past 10 years have shown positive changes in women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks. Hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (“stress hormones”) were reduced and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels are associated with depression).
These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight.
Prenatal massage will also assist to reduce edema or swelling of the joints, a common feature during pregnancy. Women in the third trimester usually have pain in the lower back or sciatica, because the uterus rests on the pelvic floor and lower back. Prenatal Massage helps to release the tension on sciatic nerve and surrounding muscles.
The body position during prenatal massage is on the side, assisted by proper pillows for maximum comfort. Massage therapy should be incorporated into prenatal care as an emotional and physical support to improve pregnancy, a healthy birth, and maternal wellness.
